If you think you know the perfect name for our new tear-drop style beavertail paddle, and would like to claim the bragging rights to having actually named a traditional piece of gear for the paddling industry (as well as own this new paddle!) then this is the contest for you.

A bit about the new paddle design by Badger Paddles:

This past year, Mike was inspired by our Classic Digger paddle and favourable memories of a canoe trip he made in his youth along the Nipissing River. And after much thought, and even more test paddling, he designed a new paddle that has a shorter, wider, blade profile making it ideal for shallow river canoe tripping. Designed to efficiently pull thru shallow water smoothy and quietly, this new (yet traditionally) tear-drop shaped river paddle is temporarily being referred to as “Paddle X” or the XXXXX-R around the Badger Paddles’ shop (each “X” represents one year that Badger Paddles has been in business with the five x’s together being a placeholder for the new name, the “R” represents RIVER). The new paddle, like all of our canoe paddles, is a solid piece of wood and is handcrafted in the heart of cottage country – not far from Algonquin Provincial Park and the very trip that inspired its design.

Now that the design work and testing phase is complete, we are ready to launch our new river style paddle but are unable to agree on a name. As many of you already know, Mike and Fiona are not only partners in Badger Paddles but partners in life as well, having been married for almost 15 years. Rather than cause marital strife, it was decided that it would be best to seek outside input and a bit of help from our fellow paddlers. And so that is where you come in….

The paddle without a name...

If you think you know the perfect name for this new paddle design and would like to, not only claim this paddle for your kit, but also the bragging rights to having officially named a piece of gear for the canoeing industry, then enter your idea and information below. We will be collecting names, short listing them by way of a small selection committee, and then putting it to a public vote. And by small selection committee, we mean Kevin Callan, Preston Ciere, Hap & Andrea Wilson, Darren Bush and a few others too.

Your entry will be judged on the name’s ability to capture the heart of canoeists and is best representative of the new Badger paddle design.

If your paddle name idea is the one picked, then you will receive the grand prize: one (1) XXXXX-R paddle to commemorate the naming of the new paddle design that will include a personalized laser engraving in celebration of your win (and so you can prove to your friends that you did in fact officially name the paddle you now hold in your hand and see in the racks of the paddling shops and outfitters that you frequent and enjoy). The grand prize will also, of course, include a Badger Paddle Sock so you may transport your new paddle to the river and put it to good use.
